Okay I left my previous comment before I finished listening to the full episode and now I have more to say! There have been some very interesting conversations on a few of the Ringer podcasts about things getting buried on streamers, especially when things get dumped. Part of it gets buried because how we talk about media isn't conducive to 10 episodes being dropped all at once. When you think about a show like The Bear, which is so good, so high quality (provided your SSRI is calibrated corrected as it is incredibly anxiety provoking lol) but is a flash in a pan. That show could have dominated the discourse for 10 weeks, but instead it was one week and then on to the next dump. 🫠

Ok I love your SSRI aside, because I often joke that The Bear should come with a warning label that one might require medication to enjoy it 😅

Always here for a Taylor + Amelia episode! Interestingly, TikTok is not the first social media platform to shift into print publishing. Wattpad has had a publishing imprint for years now, as well as a production studio to funnel film and TV rights through when their books started to go to screens. Of course Wattpad's 90 million active users is a drop in the bucket vs TikTok's billion+.

Oooh I did not know this! And my first instinct was ... 'we love a wattpad adaptation in this house' 😅 It is interesting to reflect on if there are differences other than scale.... I see that Macmillan claims Wattpad books is "the leader in data-backed publishing" (like Tiktok's 8th Note) but Wattpad the platform (in my experience at least) doesn't seem to be as algorithmically driven as Tiktok maybe? But that could also be cause they have fewer users to pattern off of.
